A WARM WELCOME TO NEW EVOLTREE PARTNER FROM ROMANIA

  • Share

The EVOLTREE network is very pleased to welcome on board the National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry (INCDS) "Marin Drăcea".

The institute will contribute both financially and in-kind to the EVOLTREE network, the latter being mostly in the form of training. Dragos Postolache, researcher in the Department of Forest Genetics at INCDS, will be the Focal Point for this EVOLTREE partner and is also member of the Working Group on Shaping the Funding Environment, which is set to start work in January 2020.

INCDS “Marin Drăcea” is joining EVOLTREE to strengthen its international cooperation and networking, to foster interdisciplinary research efforts and to implement large-scale genetics and genomics projects that will facilitate to study the adaptive capacity of tree species on a pan-European scale.

The Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding department coordinates the activities related to forest genetic resources management and conservation, assessment of genetic diversity in forest tree populations using molecular markers, selection of genotypes of high adaptive and economic value, and testing and breeding of native and non-native tree species.

The Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding department has well-built infrastructure facilities with all necessary lab equipment to perform population genetics studies, assess genetic diversity of forest tree species, and develop new molecular markers and new genomic resources.

INCDS “Marin Drăcea” available research infrastructure is provided on the ERRIS platform (Engage in the Romanian Research Infrastructure System).

Some background about INCDS

The institute has been certified by the national authority for research and development as an institutional part of the Research and Development System of National Importance and as an Excellence Centre at national level in the field of Forest Biology and Forest Management.

In terms of scientific research and technical development, it aims to address the objectives of the forest sector, in the framework of national and international research programmes specific to the following fields: forest ecology, forest measurement, genetics, protection, silvotehnics, management planning, watershed management, forest shelterbelts and ecological reconstruction, wild game and fish management.

On an international level, INCDS “Marin Drăcea”is member of or is cooperating with prestigious international entities of interest to EVOLTREE, such as the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the European Forest Institute (EFI), Long Term Ecological Research European and International Networks (LTER-Europe, ILTER),International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL), Forest-based sector Technology Platform (FTP).

At national level, the main financing and beneficiary institutions of forest research and development are the National Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation (ANCSI), public authorities for silviculture and environment protection, National Forest Administration (ROMSILVA), academic and economic entities in the forestry domain and international coordinating organizations of forest based research and development programmess with specific and priority objectives for the Romanian research, development and practice.
