Prof Louis Bernatchez: “Genomics applied to fisheries management and conservation”

Louis Bernatchez is a professor of genetics at Laval University, Québec, and a Canada Research Chair in genomics and conservation of aquatic resources. Prof Bernatchez' main long-term research program has focussed on studying the genomics and ecological basis of speciation in whitefish (Coregonus sp.). He has developed tools to provide crucial genetic information for the management and conservation of a wide range of both terrestrial and aquatic species, but mainly focussing on fishes. As more than 62 species of Canadian freshwater fish are classified as threatened or endangered, this work provides a vital framework to protect them for the future. He is currently Chief editor of the journals Evolutionary Applications and Environmental DNA.
